Really Old Giant Iguana
I have a really old Giant Iguana (circa 1989) with a fixed fork and hardtail. I love this bike it has been really good to me over the years I have logged thousoands of mile on it, and it is in pretty good shape. Now to the point, I am in the process of rebuilding it as a road bike during this process I would like to replace the stem with a new threadless model, bearing in mind that this bike does not have a threadless fork, do threadless stem adapters like the ones sold by Nashbar or Profile Designs work well, and does anyone know whether I need a 1" or a 1 1/8" one? I know this sounds like an odd question but I am not even sure where to measure this at.
Thanks for Any Help in Advance

Out of curiousity, why do you want to replace it with a threadless?
And, yea, the adapters work well in my experience.

Well earlier I was thinking that it was the only way to get a longer stem, and I was going on the word of my lbs that finding components to fit would be really diffcult, but having looked a bit harder today I may stay with the quill style stem and just replace it, but I will still need to know what size? Also now I am looking at forks which seem to be even more confusing.

Well, I'm a quill stem user still, and I have plenty of sources for them that I can pass along.
As far as the measurement, it is the outside diamter of the steerer tube. The OD as we call it. If it's 1", then it's a one inch steere and has an ID of 22.2mm, and if it measures 1-1/8" then it's an inch and an eighth steerer and has an ID of 25.4mm. Calipers can be handy, but not absolutely necessary.

The 1990 Giant Rincon I have has a 1", but measure to be sure.
Do what you like, but a good old Nitto quill stem would be a lot nicer than any threadless stem I've ever seen. But if you have a 1 1/8" steerer and want a stem that fits 26.0 road handlebars, you may have to go with the adapter and threadless stem. I have not been able to find anywhere a 1 1/8" quill stem that fits 26.0 handlebars.
