I want to upgrade my bike to a set of 9 speed STI ultegra shifters. I have not found any store that still sells the 9 speed shifters with the exception of the ST-R600 shifters which are said to be adjustable for smaller hands.

My question is: are the shifters regular size with an adjustment for smaller hands, or are they smaller shifters. I have big hands, and a smaller shifter is not what I am looking for.

Oh, and I run a triple chainring, and no, I have no desire to upgrade to a 10 speed group.

Anybody in the know about these shifters? Thanks.

These shifters look a lot like Ultegra/ 105 shifters except they have a shim inserted above the lever that brings it closer to the h/bar. This shim can be removed and they would look and feel like any normal Shimano shifter. They are double/triple compatible and 9 spd. They used to come standard on the Raleigh Capri women's specific bike. In my opinion, they are a good quality shifter.

Fit you need a smaller shifter to fit your hands better, you may need to switch out to Campagnolo.

Dan, the OP said he has large hands and want's to avoid smaller brifters but can't find the size regular ones.

That said, there should be a lot of NOS 9-speed Ultegra and 105 brifters around. Check the various mailorder places. For quite a while 105 9-speed brifters were on sale at very good prices at Performance. Ultegra and 105 9-speed were both double and triple compatible.

Edit: I just checked the new Excel Sports Boulder catalog and they list an Ultegra 9-speed STI "upgrade" kit that has the shifters, a rear derailleur, a cassette and a chain. They don't give the price but it means 9-speed brifters are still available.
