Cassette slipage
 

My flywheel\cassette isn’t working. This is the first time I’ve ever seen that. I have no idea what the deal is. It just stopped turning the back tire. Instead of locking and driving the wheel when I pedal, it just spins. Anyone out there ever seen that before?

Also, anyone have a suggestion on a good general bicycle repair manual?

Yep, I've seen this before. Time for a new freewheel or freehub.

Before you run out and buy a new freewheel/freehub, you should try dripping some oil into the mechanism. It's possible that the pawls are just stuck and need a little lubrication to free them up.

If that doesn't work, then it's probably not worth the time to repair it. Just get a new one.

Park Tools http://www.parktool.com/repair/ is an excellent source of information. If the pawls are broken, frozen or really dirty inside your freewheel or freehub you could have that kind of problem. You may be better off to look for a replacement wheel at your LBS or Ebay unless you have the special tools and are way above average on your wrenching skills. Good Luck

I think I’m going to try slamming it on the ground a few times, and the oil too. If that doesn’t work, you’re right, I might to have get my pipe wrench.
