Arrrrgh! Chain cleaning!
 

Ok heres the question, I have a new shimano chain on my new bike.


Can you put a SRAM power link on a Shimano chain? Will it fit?

Its a 9 speed HG53, if that helps?
or should I just get a sram?

From what I have been told. Yes!...Sweet eh?

I thought this was about cleaning?

Sorry Maelstrom, I missed that I deleted the line,

"I remove the chain to clean it, because on bike chain cleaners don't work."

PS any snow your way? I noticed the skis in the basement yesterday, Id swear they were whispering to me.

I switched to SRAM chains after my Shimano chains snapped. My friend saw the cleaning benefits of the PowerLink on my chains but because he had a relatively new Shimano chain, decided to just replace the link. It works fine for him.

Just make sure to get the right "colour" PowerLink. Gold is for 9sp.

Yep cleaning chains sucks.... I have used power links on Shimano chains and even mixed SRAM and Shimano chains together. I ran a mixed chain for better then 5000 miles on my recumbent touring tandem. The biggest draw back to Shimano chains was the little replacement pins, every time I went looking for them they had gotten lost.

Here I go again spouting the wonders of black tape, or as you would call it "electrical tape"

just a wrap around your chain / multi tool, and voilla, your ****mano replacement pins are right there for you where you need em, unless you forget your chain / multi tool.

if you put several wraps on yoour seatpost, you also have a good bandage for cut knuckels... not medically proven, but most Electricians / Linemen swear by it! I do!!

Electrical tape or duct tape works well.

My on the bike tool bag gets switched from bike to bike and things get lost. The last time I broke a chain was climbing a hill to a camp ground, with only 10 miles left for the day. So I get my tool kit and SURPRIZE! the pins are missing. So I shorten up the chain a link or two, and press the origanal pin back in. Thinking to myself "That should hold" I ended up putting the chain back together two more times before getting to camp.

So I have started keeping a power link in the tool kit, and on my touring bikes I put another in a small bag with spare nuts and bolts stuffed in the handle bars with the spare spokes and nipples.
