Brake confusion

OK, I have an older MTB with what I assume are V-Brakes. I mean the cable attaches to both arms directly and pulls from the center. On my Trek Hybrid I have a similiar system, but the arms are longer and the cable goes through an elbow and pulls from the side. Are these cantilever brakes. Also, can I swap the first type for the second with existing bosses? At first glance it looks like I'd get better stopping power with the second set-up, and it shouldn't be hard to change. Any thought? I searched, but am still confused.

You got them mixed up. The first ones are the cantilever brakes and the second are the V-Brakes. For as long as you are dealing with the same tire sizes, yes you can swap them.

Be sure you swap the brake levers too, as the mechanical advantages are different between those types of brakes.
