I replaced the brake shoes on my old MTB today (1987 vintage). Front is canti and rear is chain stay U-brake. But after adjusting cables and such, I noticed that one arms of the rear was barely coming off the rim. So I turned the tiny allen screw on the adjustable arm and it went all they way in with no change. So I took the calipers off and saw that the little disc that holds the spring had jumped up over the adjusting screw and is also basically corroded to the brake caliper. So that explains the low spring tension in that caliper as well as the non-adjustability. Any ideas on how I might get that disc free?

Failing that, what are my replacement options? I know that only U-brake and roller cams will work on the posts. But who makes U-brakes these days?

They still make U-brakes for BMX applications. Check Dia-Tech/Dia-Compe or Tektro.

some of the tektro ones are nice bc they use v-brake pads. makes adjusting them a little easier.

If you want the best, look for a Campy Euclid.
