7-speed cassette on 8-speed hub?

I've got a 7-speed cassette on a 1997 Acera-X hub, and I want to put it on another wheel built around a 1996 XT 8-speed hub. I thought 7- and 8-speed hubs might have been the same width back then, but they're not -- the 8-speed is 4mm wider. So there's some lateral play if I put the 7-speed cassette on. Is there any way to do this and end up with proper 7-speed shifting?

Yeah. There's a spacer you can buy that fits behind the 7-speed cassette. You should probably also check to be sure that your two hubs have the same over locknut spacing.

What do you mean by "over locknut spacing"? I put the cassette on to see how the spacing looked, and the locknut fit perfectly and screwed in securely, but the rest of the cassette could move laterally a few mm.

Yeah, that's what the spacer Retro Grouch mentioned is for.
It goes between the largest cog and the flange on the inside of the freehub body to stop the lateral play you're describing.

Over-locknut Distance "O.L.D." spacing is explained here: https://www.sheldonbrown.com/frame-spacing.html

https://www.sheldonbrown.com/k7.html explains everything else you wanted to know about cassette interchangability.

I should have guessed that Sheldon Brown would have the answer for an old-parts-compatibility question! Thanks.
