hub wear noob wheelbuilder questions

the problem:

I bought a flip-flop low-end suzue hub pre-laced to an alu. weinmann rim and had all sorts of trouble getting it true. problem was the rim was bent, so I took it apart, straightened the rim and relaced it (3 trailing/3 leading pattern). I noticed the hub eyelets had some gouges and stress "dimples" where the elbows exited the eyelets on the exterior of the hub.

Is the hub okay to work with, or are these dimples something to worry about structurally?

I also kind of bent some of the spokes a bit--I'm assuming they'll be okay and straighten out under tension.

Sorry, these questions might totally be basic. this is my first wheelbuild, and I don't want to have it explode under me, esp. on a fixie. Fun stuff, though! Way easier than I thought it would be.

Those "dimples" are normal and any hub that has been build into a wheel will have them. The general rule for rebuilding a wheel with a used hub is to follow the original spoking pattern and direction so the new spokes lie in the original dimples.

HahA, hope you were not the guy I was watching the other day at proteus. His wheel went into a taco when he was stress relieving. Cheers, and if you want people to ride fix or ss w...PM

Just curious: where'd you get the wheel from, and why wasn't it true to begin with?

yup, that was me at Proteus,

timc--you can check out the story. I shouldn't repeat all over the place--just click on my name and/or look up the "wheel true blues" thread in SS/FG. Bought the wheel from Proteus for a fixie on the cheap. The wheel was a bit wobbly when I bought it, I picked it up the other day and heard that tell-tale ping of spokes stress relieving, thought I would help that process along--bong taco city, which I then tried to fix @ the shop resulting in the tears witnessed by snr. poopncow.
