Old and New mix, will it work??
Does anyone know if there will be compatability issues with this conglomeration of parts? Campy Veloce 10spd triple crankset, older Suntour cogset (five cogs), suntour Barcon shifters (friction), My main concern is the triple is ramped for index shifting, will I get unwanted shifts, using friction? Will the chain be compatible with the newer style chainrings and the old Suntour cogset ? Thanks in advance for any advice or tips on this.

I went the other way on this, replacing a Suntour 5 speed cogset with an Ultegra 9 speed cassette. Using a new wheel, of course. But my old front chainrings work fine with the 9 speed chain and friction shifters.
So I guess I did the exact opposite with no problems, I can't imagine you'd have any problems doing it the other way as long as you stick with friction shifters. Az |
It'll all work together but that's a seriously goofy collection of parts. What are you using for derailleurs?

Yeah, I'm trying to slightly upgrade an old Kabuki touring frame, the bike is like new, but the chainrings are
52/44/36, so I would like lower gearing, for hauling rear panniers and hills, has an obscure crankset that reads CUSTOM on the crank arms, can't find rings to fit, so I thought the Campy might work(good price) on E-Bay. The derailluers are Suntour VX, but like new, I guess my goal is to improve the gearing and comfort without spending a wad of money on a thirty year old mid range bike. The wheels are 27'' Mavic and have 36 spokes on the rear. trying not to buy new wheels, not sure if 700's would fit etc, etc. Thanks for the help, done a fair amount of riding over the years but not much wrenching, so this is kinda new to me ....but its interesting. |
Thanks Sheldon, trying to make some upgrades (on the cheap) to an old Kabuki touring bike without spending more than its worth, not too up on bike mechanicals, but am becoming amazed at the thousands of different parts that don't fit thousands of other parts, that look like they should fit .....amazing!!

Hey Desperado, it sounds like you have the same crank as my old '82 Miyata. If you can measure the BDD, and it comes out to 86, I found some replacements for about $10 apiece.
