Front chain biting
Hello,
Just to qualify, I don't have a lot of bicycle mechanic experience. I know how to do very basics, enough to get me to work, school, and back (commuting's my biking application). There is a piece of metal attached to the front derailleur that my chain goes through as it's on its way to my front chainrings. When I'm in my 2 smallest gears, my chain rubs against this guard. I know this is probably just a simple problem with bounds for the front derailleur. Would someone be obliged to tell me if this is something I can tackle, and if so, how? Thanks in advance.

Ohhhhh.............that is suppose to be there. What you have is probably the need to adjust the FD by fine tuning using the barrel adj. rather than the screw set.

The front derailleur has a spring mechanism mounted on the bike frame, and that holds a cage that the chain goes through. Sounds like the cage is the part that's rubbing. It's job is to push the chain onto whatever gear wheel you select, so while you're changing gears, it should rub against the chain, but once you are in the selected gear it should automatically reposition itself so the chain goes through it without touching. Since there are many types of shifters it's hard to give advice on how to fine tune it, but it should be a simple job for the LBS to fix it and they should show you how to do it.
