Bent Chain

Hey so during a race yesterday in a downhill section my drive train seized up. I stopped and saw that my chain had fallen off my crank set and kind of off my rear derailer. I got the chain back on both of them but still had probelms. I looked closer and saw that my chain was bent. How did i do this. It has happened before. I was able to bend it back a little but it still doesnt work very well, i will need a new one. My question is how did i do this and how do i not do it again? Thanks.

I am not exactly sure how you did it, but I can offer up my own stories. First chain I bent was when I was hit by a car (guessing that wasn't your case). Another was getting the chain caught between the freewheel and frame of my BMX. One other that I know of was when I bashed the chain between a rock and the chainring.

Did this happen around a masterlink?

Anytime it comes off the front chainrings, especially at speed, it'll gather up on itself and tangle at odd angles. I bent one when I shifted up to the big ring going fast downhill, the front der was poorly adjusted and sent the chain right off the outside. It got all bunched up, pinched between the crank arm and the chainring and even fed into my spokes a bit. We were barely able to remove enough bad links to get me home!
