Exchanging Forks
 

A while back I got a 1993 Colnago Master Light. It came with two forks, a steel Colnago and a Kestrel carbon. Keeping with tradition, I put the original Colnago fork on. Now, I thinking of switching to the Kestrel and am wondering just how difficult a task. Remember, when the bike was shipped, the Kestrel was already on it so it is cut specifically for this frame. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Threadless or threaded? If the fork is the right length (for either), then all you need are the tools. For threadless, you need an allen key, and for threaded, you need headset wrenches. But you did this before... (?)

I have not done this. After I got the bike, I had the shop to replace the old headset with a threaded Chris King. I am just learning; but, since this fork was on it, then I am thinking it shouldn't be that difficult to just simply exchange. Right? Any more tips, I would appreciate.

OK, you can do it if you have the tools. Look at the headset. You need a big adjustable to get at the locknut, and a headset wrench (big and skinny) to get at the adjustable nut below. You'll also need some method for getting the crown race off of the fork. Using a punch wrapped in a rag has worked for me in the past, but be careful. Parktool.com for rundown.
