Freewheels.please help!

just wondering if it is possible to get a freewheel that rides forward as normal but when riding fakie/bakwards it freewheels (cranks don't turn bakwards)? personally i wouldn't kno how something like that would work but earlier today i was watching some bmx video's and some were riding fakie and freewheeling at the same time? anyone kno how to achieve this? or was i just seeing things?

Well, in a 10 speed bike, Shimano manufactured something like this in the 1970's to maybe early 1980's. It was called the Shimano Front Freewheeling System. The rear 5 speed freewheel was screwed onto the rear hub and did not freewheel. It move backward or forwards in the same direction as the rear wheel. Now the crankset, sometimes 1 piece and sometimes 3 piece cottered, had the freewheel built into its bottom bracket. You would push down on the pedals, and if you stopped, the 2 front sprockets continued freewheeling forward, while also pulling the rear wheel along with it. It was a great bulletproof system for beginner cyclists. Negatives-added a lot of weight to the bike, needed a special rear freewheel (that did not freewheel) special crank arms, sprockets , bottom bracket, and special (again) Shimano tool to remove the bottom bracket freehub set up. Anyway, don't know if anyone makes a single speed version of this. Perhaps a BMX knowledgabel person could answer.

The only systems I have ever seen are:
1) standard ratcheting freewheel, which permits coasting and/or backpedaling;
2) "track bike" fixed gear, in which the cranks always turn when the rear wheel does, and in the same direction.

You aren't seeing things. The riders in the BMX videos have freecoaster hubs.

They're basicly coaster brake hubs with a few mods.

Odyssey are working on a new coaster at the moment.

cheers mate just what i was looking for! any one know if some one makes a mounting bike version?

Nope, they're all 110mm single speed. If you're some sort of urban MTBer, might I suggest you get a proper bike :) http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...26770575549750
