WSD Road Bike rims

I have a Trek 2000 WSD road bike and need new tires. I thought that my wheel size was 650c, but when I looked at my old tires they say 26x1. Are these the same thing? I'm pretty sure they are, but I need to make sure because I am trying to order tires from the internet and I don't want to get the wrong size. If I get 650 X 23 will they work? If it helps, my rims are el-cheapo matrix aurora that came with the bike.

650c wheels have a bead seat diameter of 571 mm so somewhere on your tires the small print should say ISO 571 x XX (where XX is probably 20 or 25) mm. According to Sheldon Brown's web site 650c tires are often referred to as 26x1 so that's most likely what you have but the "571" is the real test.

If your bike is fairly new then yes, 26x1" is the same as 650x23c. It is reasonably common for those two sizes to mean the same thing but buyer beware. There is also the mountain bike size 26" being used with a 1" wide tire. The Mountain bike size has an ISO size of 559 mm. A 650c road tire has an ISO size of 571mm so look for an ISO size on the tire somewhere.

Regards, Anthony
