Prolink Users (How Many Miles Between Lubes?)
 

I am just curious as to how many miles you get from a single Prolink lube job.

I re-lube about every 150 miles with Pro-Link, just to be sure I don't run the chain too dry.

Depends on the riding conditions. About every 300 or 400 miles in good weather, and every time I get caught in the rain.

Twice a month.

I ride off-road:

1. If it's wet - after each ride.
2. If it's dry (but dusty) - after every other ride, about 40 miles.

I use it every ride, about 30 minutes before put some on, let it sit and then when I am ready to ride take a paper towel and wipe off excess....great stuff...

Thats to often and wasting your money but if it makes you happy.

yeah I know, I have a gold business and a construction company gave me 5 cases for free, so I don't worry too much about how much too use.....this stuff is used to lube the bearings at the plant

1. Road bike: Lasts a long time, many, many rides.

2. Mountain Bike: Looking at the chain after one 25 mile dirty ride, the lube is starting to disappear. I've never found any lube that is good in dirt. By nature it isn't. So I lube when i think about it, other than that, i just ride. So I probably lube it every 75 miles or so.

I lube my chain when I think it needs it. The beauty of Pro-Link is it's cleansing ability. If you can afford it , every ride is not too much. I own a shop and sell it also, so of course I would say go for it. No, I really like this lube. It works well.

You can never have enough lube.

I disagree. The problem with chain lubes is that it's hard not to put on too much. It only takes the tiniest drop that you can manage.

When I worked in shops I could guess the level of experience of a rider by their chain. Inexperienced riders never lube their chain. Then they go through a period where they're always dripping stuff onto it. YUCK! I didn't like having to touch those chains with my pliers much less my fingers. Eventually riders gain the experience necessary to get it right.

Usually about every 300 miles. But, I never ride in the rain and I take the drive train components off the bike about every 900 miles and clean them well before reinstalling and relubing with ProLink.

Sorry to bump a slightly old thread, but am having the same question as the original poster.

This will sound rather silly, but a normal application for me involves a drop on every link, then a wipe off of the excess. After doing this and riding about 40 miles, it was hard to tell how well lubricated the chain was - does this seem normal? Is my method the same as your application procedure?

The chain will be well lubricated even if it isn't apparent. The lube that does the job is inside and out of sight. A lot of lube on the outside just attracts dirt and grit.

I don't bother with the "drop on each link" approach. First I wipe the dirt off the chain by running it through a rag or paper towel while turning the crank by hand (turn it backwards to keep from spinning the rear wheel and endangering your fingers). Then, I apply a slow steady stream of ProLink to the entire chain, again by turning the crank by hand. Wait a few minutes, wipe off the excess and repeat the lube application. Again wipe off the excess and go ride.

when i'm touring in average dry summer weather and riding 80-100 miles a day, i will reapply every other day.

A drop on every link is the correct method if a little time consuming. After getting all the way around the chain I run the chain backwards several revolutions and then let it sit for a few minutes. I then lightly wipe off the excess lube. If your chain is realy dirty to start with I will wipe some of the crud off first with a rag that has some Prolink on it.

I find that I'm using Prolink once a week at the moment to do 200-250 km and I will apply it before a race or big weekend ride.

I take a cloth soaked in rubbing alcohol and wipe the chain dry. After a time to let the alcohol dry I lube each link, spin the cranks forward and back, and wait ten minutes or overnight. Then I wipe the chain dry with a clean dry paper towel. If you do it right the chain will sound oiled but look relatively dry. Once a year I take the chain off the bike and soak in brake cleaner and start again.

How long between lubing the chain? Most recently, 125 miles. Before that 30 miles! I cleaned and lubed my chain before a race. Warm-up plus race was probably around 30 miles. Drove back with bikes on the roof through torrential rain. Had to re-lube before my next ride. Rode the bike two more times - last Sunday and today. Ran into lots of rain, so I ended up cleaning and re-lubing it again today. I may ride tomorrow and have to clean it again after another 65 miles.

i Barely get three months out of a chain,although i do ride 800 to 900 miles a month.
I use Prolink & rarely get more than 100 miles from an application.
When it rains i either use Finish line cross country or my own concoction with chainsaw lube.
Prolink is no good whatsoever in wet conditions.

You forgot to preface this with "In my opinion". We have very wet conditions here in Maine on a regular basis. Prolink has served me well. Lube favorites are like opinons and well, you know what I mean. Everyone has one.

So you ride 30 miles aday all month?

if you all switched to DuMonde Tech chain lube you'd be a lot happier.
