chain suck?

i think that is what it is called.
first off, let me warn you and apologize- i know nottthhhing about roadbikes, given i've never owned one until today. it rode just fine and dandy for like 5 minutes, then the pedal got stuck. i am a complete oblivious fool regarding bikes, so i apologize if this is a dumb question, but if you have the wisdom i lack and you are bored, the help would be greeaaatly appreciated!

so i added an arrow to show what is making the chain stuck. i am hoping it is something really simple i am overlooking, but i thought i'd ask around before i do something wrong.

these two levers have two cables, one of which is attached to that piece that is in the way of the chain. i assume those two levers have something to do with changing gears?

here is a picture where you can see the whole scheme of things.

any help would be greatly appreciated!

It looks to me like you need a front derailleur adjustment. Maybe you just need to refine your shifting technique. If you think that you may be up to doing it yourself, goto the Park tool website and follow their instructions.

What you have isn't chainsuck. Chainsuck is mostly a mountain bike thing that haappens when the chain catches a burr on the front chainring and tries to ride up the backside of the chainring until it gets caught against the frame.

It seems the tail of the front derailleur is hitting the teeth of the big chainring. You will have to raise it a couple of mm until it clears.

BTW, positng the pictures right side up would make diagnosing this a bit easier. :)

\Glad you said that.

oh man, i feel silly, my bike was upsidedown. sorry.

i think i managed to fix the immediate problem of adjusting the front derailleur. but when the chain is on the smaller spoke, there is way little tension, so i probably cannot switch gears. here's how it looks now..

Your chain may be too long, or your rear derailleur's cage windup spring may need to be tensioned. In the large-to-large gear combination, can you pull down fairly far on the chain, or is it tight across the top and bottom?

By the way, "chain suck" refers to a chain's failure to release from the chainring at the bottom of the pedal stroke; this is not your problem.

What kind of bike is that? With the gear cables routed under the bottom bracket and the plain parallelogram Campag. rear derailleur (Gran Sport?), I am guessing circa 1980.
