Are you tiring of my Trek850 questions?

Looking on fleabay, there are a lot of octalink BB and cranksets. Are those compatible with the frame of my Trek850? Is there any reason why I can't use a 'road' triple on my MTB frame since I'm turning it into a faster commuter? The bike currently has a top pull FD, I'm assuming this would work with a road triple too?

Bikes: '''96 Litespeed Catalyst, '05 Litespeed Firenze, '06 Litespeed Tuscany, '12 Surly Pacer, All are 3x8,9 or 10. It is hilly around here!

The MTB front derailleur won't match the radius of a typical 52 or 53T large chainring on a road crank since they are usually intended for a 42 to 46T large ring. You will have to set the derailleur higher than ideal and the shifting will be mediocre at best.

A road front derailleur would solve the problem but I've never seen a top pull road fd.
