Cleaning disk brakes
The disk brakes in my bicycle get "tired" once in a while. I have Avid 5 cable operated and after sometime the brakes stop breaking efficiently. I press the brake lever and the bicycle does not stop as it used to be. Some times the calliper doesn't even lock the disk. The pads are new, 4 month and I am a weekend trails rider and to clean the pads I use simple toillet paper. How can I solve this problem? Thanks!

You probably don't need to clean the pads. You might want to clean the rotors with rubbing alcohol. The alcohol will remove any oils and contaminants on the rotors. The alcohol dries fast and does not leave a residue. Pout a little on a clean rag or towel and wipe the rotors a few times.

1. Remove wheels.
2. Soak a clean rag in denatured alcohol. 3. Slide the rag back and forth between the pads until it comes out clean. 4. Wipe the rotors with the rag. 5. Replace wheels. 6. Make sure all brake fastners are properly tightened. 7. Adjust pad clearance to rotors. 8. Ride. 9. Smile. If squeeking persists, remove the wheels and gently sand the rotors with 180-200 grit sand paper, just enough to remove the glaze. Clean rotors with denatured alcohol soaked rag, and replace. That should do it. OHB |

I use BBB pads with my Deore mechanicals, they work way better than the stock Shimano pads. |
