Don't buy a spoke wrench until you know how to tune your wheels. It's the cheapest, quickest way to screw things up on your bike.
|
Here's one: when using a chain whip to hold a cassette while undoing the locknut, make sure the chainwhip's chain wraps completely around the sprocket, so that the handle rests on that last bit of chain to act as fulcrum. If you don't, as soon as you put pressure on it, the handle will jam between two sprockets, spreading them apart and bending the chain, possibly leaving you with a nastily stuck tool, and with a damaged cassette if you still care about it.

With all the comments about WD-40 in the thread, I thought I would throw in a warning. I would resist using WD-40 automatically - I used to use it ALL the time till I got sick. Found out that WD-40 contains a penetrant - hence why it's good for penetrating stuck parts - called DMSO. That's dimethyl sulfoxide for all you chemists out there. Problem is, it also penetrates skin and nasal membranes. They used to use DMSO as a liniment to relieve painful joints, and the military used it nerve gas. DMSO goes through your skin and carries whatever else along with it. Will give you one heck of a headache that Advil and Tylenol WON'T fix - TRUST ME! If you MUST use WD-40, wear rubber gloves and don't breathe the vapors.

If the tire is a tight fit, you need to slip the beads (180 degrees from the last section of tire left off the rim) down into the deep part of the rim in order to slip the last bit of tire over the rim. If you install the tire beginning at the valve, the valve will prevent the beads from going down tho the deep part. I don't know if I explained that very well. But, if you ever have trouble getting the last little bit of tire over the rim, this technique should allow you to do it without using tools. |

[QUOTE=masi61]Here's a few:
5) Don't overtighten crank bolts and don't grease the tapers. QUOTE] ....erk?.......oops......thanks. :o How come? My thoughts are that the grease will prevent the crank from becoming stuck to the BB spindle. |

I also just learned this bit of wisdom recently. I haven't had to use my tire levers since. |
Don't make your girlfriend or wife change a tire, because "it will be good for her"
