There is no problem with these old threads. Some of the ideas put up in the new posts have been excellent, and weren't covered in the first iteration. I don't see a thread you started on this subject in the past day, week or month... so your post is about as helpful as... nothing.

I confess to using the Park Tools device. I, at times, need to bring in and take out my bike to from basement work area, particularly during winter months. The stairs are narrow so it helps a great deal, keeps the front wheel straight ahead so my old body can focus in getting it in and out.

I like this one best, going to try it. I always have PVC pipe and fittings, been meaning to make one, that works like the Part Tools, from 1/2" PVC. It's been on my mind a lot more this last couple of weeks trying to get the new group adjusted properly. Been through another 2 sets of cables and housing in as many weeks.

Well, the person who asked the question is at least still an active member, but the thread was revived to answer the question rather than ask for more input. One would assume that Jed19 has found a satisfactory answer to this particular question some time in the last 11 years.
But just in case, here's what I use:
I originally bought a couple of these Velcro straps to hold the front wheel still while carrying bikes on a trunk rack, but I've found they're also useful for keeping bare handlebars away from the top tube before I attach cables. Most of the time I use the angled bike plus gravity method, but I'm a bit too clumsy for that to be safe before when the bars can spin freely if I bump the front wheel.
