Removing rear wheel Raleigh Tourist?

Another question concerning a Raleigh Tourist with fully enclosed chain. Is there a trick for removing the rear wheel on this model? I had to replace the tires, front and rear, and it was a real pain removing the rear wheel. I took off the small piece of chain case next to the rear sprocket, but after that it was a struggle to twist the rear wheel while trying to slide (or pry) the chair over the stub of the axle so that I could pull the wheel off. I finally got it off after a lot of yanking, pulling, and prying. But I thought there must be some trick that I’m missing.
Any hints?

Perhaps a related question. I don’t see any obvious way of removing the chain case on this model. There is a bolt thru the rear chainstay, but what holds it in the front?

Thanks

M Riley
