sturmey archer lubrication?
 

I just dug an old Raleigh Tourist out of my garage. Not touched in 20 years. The 3-speed hub was frozen of course, but a little WD-40 took care of that. It now shifts well. My question is this: does the light motor oil recommended for the shift mechanism also lubricate the balls and cones of the axle? I greased the front hub (no oil hole on this model), but I don't see any obvious way of greasing the rear balls and cones.

Sturmey Archer axle bearings are lubricated by the oil that is pumped into the fitting on the hub. Use a couple of tablespoons of SAE 10 or 20 wt. motor oil. Preferably non-detergent monograde. Be sure to use heavy grease on the little roller chain on the end of the indicator spindle. This is a rapidly wearing part.

I know a guy who gives grease to the cups, but its not really neccesary. If you overhaul the whole hub, go for it. If not, oil is fine.

Thanks for the info. The tip about putting grease on the index chain is a very good idea. I had not thought of it.
