Tektro Io?
I'm thinkin' of getting a haro v4 and the brakes come with that model. Is that Io bad? I dont hear too good things about tektro though. How much is the Io anyways? Would I be better off with Hayes' MX, Avid bb5's or just stick with the Tektro?

It might be good to say a bit more, so those of us who don't keep up on exact model names can help you. Are you talking about a mountain bike? BMX? V-Brakes? Cantilever brakes? Sponge pies?
Tektro has an okay reputation in caliper brakes for road bikes, and they manufacture some dual-pivot brakes for other people. So not all their stuff is bad.

I have a hardtail that came with Tektro Io disc brakes. I was never satisfied with their stopping power even after replacing the original pads, careful cleaning, etc. The performance was 'acceptable' as far as having enough stopping power for normal riding, but not better than V-brakes under normal, dry conditions.
I replaced the brakes with Avid BB-5s and was astounded at the improved perfomance.
My recommendation is to pursue a brake upgrade with the LBS before you purchase the bike.

I tested a Hardrock Sport Disc (Tektro IO) before purchasing my Rockhopper Comp disc with Avid BB5s. The salesman said that the Hardrock had already been taken out on a couple test rides, and being interested in seeing what a 13 inch frame (Yes I'm fairly short) would be like, I gave it a go. I tried out the rear brakes, and I was like, "That's It"? I had to put a lot of muscle behind the lever before it would even think of skidding the rear.
When I was trying out the 15 in. frame Rockhopper, I noticed a strange scrubbing sound from the rear tire when I was at the bottom of a downhill about to make a turn while braking. "That doesn't sound right," I thought. I wondered what that was before realizing that I was skidding the tread, the tread that I was about to BUY...oops...right off of the tires. And that was on a new out of the box bike that had been sitting in their basement storage area. The brakes hadn't been broken in at all.
Definitely go with the BB5s.

Upgrading from Tektro to the Hayes MX would be a very small step. Better to get the Avid's when you can.
