tubular mounting

Best way to mount a new tubular on a new carbon rim?

I lightly sanded rim bed of new wheel to roughen the surface. Cleaned the rim bed with Isopropyl Alcohol to remove any grease. Then

- pre stretch tub on old clean rim for min. 1day. 100psi.
- Thin layer of glue on rim, layer on tub tape. Leave both to dry for 24hrs.
- Second thin layer on rim. Leave again for 24hrs.
- Third layer onto rim. 2nd layer on tub tape. You got it, left for 24hrs.
- Final layer on rim. Leave for 10 mins to flash slightly, then mount tub.
- Leave for 24hrs before riding.

This was a Vittoria Evo Pista CS tub onto a Planet X / Hed Stinger carbon track rim using Vittoria Mastik One cement. For track use on steep (45 degree) wooden and concrete tracks; you might be able to get away with fewer layers for road use where removal on the road in the event of a flat may be an issue.

This article has some interesting comparative tests on different glue/rim combos inclusing Carbon. It also contains a recommended procedure for gluing.

Slightly abbreviated method, same as above but:

Put masking tape on the sides of the rim, makes clean up much easier.

Not that its a bad technique, but I don't do the layer thing with the glue. Just ****er the tire and the rim with glue, don't skimp on the glue, let it dry completely (overnight is good)then put together.
