Ultegra 10 STI Triple to Double.

hi everyone,

i'm new here, and my search results came up with mixed or outdated answers. I apologize in advance if this is an old topic.

I inherited a Ultegra 10 speed gruppo (6603) gruppo and want to convert to a double. I have bought Ultegra 10 speed double cranks and bb and will buy a new front derailer. Will i be able to run smoothly with a triple front shifter and triple rear derailer? (all ultegra)

shimano's website seems to imply they aren't compatible although i've heard otherwise.

You may need a new rear derrailer the current one can work but the short cage will produce better shifting.

Why not keep the triple fd and shifters and just set the fd's inner stop screw so it can't move too far? I'd certainly try that first. You can always spend the extra money on the double shifters and fd if my idea doesn't work to your satisfaction.

As to the RD, the triple will work fine as is. The only advantage to going to a double is a slight reduction in weight and better acceptance by your racing buddies. Shifting speed will be so close you won't ever notice the difference.

well, believe me, i'm trying to do whatever i can to buy as few new parts as possible. I'm running it right now with a nine speed Dura Ace BB and Cranks and a 10 speed Triple Front Derailer. It shifts, but it doesn't work too well. Sheldon Brown's website has a litle blurb somewhere about some triple FD's not working with double set ups, so between that and the non compatible cranks, i'm hoping to eliminate those problems.

i'm mostly concerned about having to replace the shifters as they cost an arm and a leg.

is anyone else out there running ultegra 10 triple shifters on a double system effectively?

Triple STI shifters can be used on a double no problem.

thanks for the help

well, we'll see. i've assembled all the parts and i've got beer in the basement. let's see if we can make this happen.

i'll keep you updated.

That's poor advice.

No way will he or she need a new rear derailer, and there's no differenece in shifting quality. Only difference is a couple of grams of weight.

well i'm not worried about a couple grams, the way i eat.

i didn't buy a RD anyway, didn't seem to make sense intuitively. did come across a double FD though.
