I searched the board before posting this but couldn't find any threads that helped me. I've always worked on thumb shifters and Rapidfire Plus shifters, but never Gripshift. I always assumed it would be quite simple. Today I decided to fix my father's bike up a little with a new headset and all new cables, and of course he has Gripshift. The front derailleur was no problem, but I am having a lot of difficulty with the rear. I route the cable through the shifter in what appears to be the proper way (around the groove?) but when I try shifting it will jump 3 to 4 cogs with every click. I thought I may have had the cable too tight but loosening it did not change anything. Just for giggles I tried tightening it more, yet nothing changed then either. I noticed the front shifter appears to route the cable a little differently than the rear, but I assumed this was simply because the rear has more gears and has to pull more cable in smaller increments. I swear, I can take apart a Rapidfire shifter and put it back together, but I can't get Gripshift to work. lol I figure I'm probably missing something really obvious, so if anyone can point me in the right direction I would be most appreciative. Well I got it. Simply case of incorrect cable routing. Mods feel free to delete this thread if possible. Thanks!

Tell us what the fix is then other people who have this problem can find the sloution when they do a search. I think the twist grip does not puill directly on the cable end, but achieves the small pull by pushing sideways on the cable a little way down from the fixed cable end.

There are several models, and they appear to gone through an evolution in design. The newest ones we have on some of the police bikes have little plasic "windows" you can pop out to replace the cable. Older models had a complex system where the cable had to be wound around the plastic drum, and they were a real pain to work on.
