Getting mechanic licence

I want to buy a good set of tools for road bikes this summer but I still do not know much about working on bikes. What are the best (some of the good ones) bike mechanic schools? I plan to make a vacation out of it. I want to learn to be very proficient at working on a bike as when I am at school there is not a shop within 90 miles. I like the idea of Park Tool's class.

If you can't find schools, just go work at a LBS. You will pick up the basics quickly and build from there. I love bikes like a lot of you so I figured a part time job at my LBS while I was in college would be a lot of fun. It has turned out to be a blast. I have only been a mechanic for about 6 months now and there isn't much I run into that I can't fix at this point.

Awesome. Ya I plan to get a job when I am back in KC this summer working part time as a bike mechanic. I noticed you go to school at Mizzou. I go to truman state university about 90 miles north of you.

The two most recognized and respected schools are UBI in Oregon and BBI in Colorado, each offering multiple courses that last from 2 to 3 weeks. You can get a cert from either.
