Will mountain bike friction shifter work on my old Peugot?

Hi all. Yesterday broke the camel's back. My commuter is an old 1989 (give or take) peugot 10-speed. It currently has down-tube-mounted shifters and I nearly kill myself everytime I have to shift because of the crappy road I ride on to work. I'm more of a mountain biker and not used to the unstable skinny tires. Taking my hands off the bars to shift those old friction shifters has got to stop.

My question to the road bikers out there is, is it possible to use bar-mounted shifters with the old derailleur on the bike? Oh, and I have flat bars on the bike at the moment.

Any non-indexed, friction shifter will shift most anything, within reason, but the far easier (and cheaper) route would be a set of stem shifters. Any place that has used parts should have 65181 sets of them; don't forget the cable stops that will bolt on where your current downtube shifters are. PM me if you have a hard time finding some locally.

Old thumbies

For those who loathe stem shifters (and suicide levers), old thumb shifters is the way to go. Suntour XC Pro or Shimano XT both works well in friction mode. (and are very nice relics of mtb history). Ebay is the place to buy them.

Didn't think of those, good suggestion. Nice relics of MTB history, eh? Who knew that old schwinn hybrid in my parents' basement had so much going for it...
