Bad Pedal??

Hello again all. I had a post about a weird clicking noise comming from what I believed to be my BB not too long ago. I tested everything you told me to out, and came up with nothing. The other day, (I have not had the money to fix it, so it is still there but not getting worse really) I was out on a ride and nocied that it felt more like it was comming from the left pedal. I even was able to make it click about 8 times in a row by moving my foot a certain way. ALSO, I never had the noise until a few rides after the new Shimano 520 clipless. Is it possible that the barrings in the pedal are bad?? I got the pedals brand new in the box, so should be able to send them back to shimano for a new pair, but could this cause the weird clicking noise noise i have been experiencing?

P.s. I can even "feel" the click in the sole of my left foot if that helps.

Assuming you haven't swapped out the pedals - do so now. If you can actually feel the crunk through your leg, my bet is it's definitley related to the BB/crank/pedal area.

Most likely your BB is gone. By the way - list the stuff you've already checked.

Without looking at the pedal, there is no real way to say, but since it is affected by the way you move your foot, you may also want to make sure that the cleat is mounted properly. Sometimes you mount the cleat straight only to discover that you don't hold your foot straight on the pedal and you end up with a cleat that is on the edge of its float when you are riding normally. Anyway it is something to check before you try to send the pedals back. If the pedal turns smoothly (no grinding, catching or popping) you may have trouble convincing a mechanic that this is actually the problem even it it is. Also, try pulling the pedal off of the crank, regreasing the treads and putting it back on.

AH I have not tried that yet! good call!! Let me see... I have check the crank bolts and their tightness, both pedal tightness, looked for cracks in the frame by the bb... check tightness on seat post, both wheels, spokes... and that is about it. Everything is tight and lubed. BUT, I will swap out to my old standard pedals and try it out.... good call! thanks! I'll let you know what i find!

also try pulling off the cranks and looking to make sure that the crank is not worn funny. (i.e. if it is supposed to be square make sure that it is still square. sometimes the creaking is a sign that your crank is stripping out. )

If you ride off the saddle, turning the cranks while standing on the pedals, does the sound continue?

Yes, the sounds does countin Al, and if I move my foot in a specific way, I can create the sounds over and over. While im crusing though, the sound rarley happens, it is normally when there is strain happening, ie comming off a hard start, speeding up, staing up. I am going to take the origional pedals out now and test things out to see what I get, I'll let you know what I find!

Might be worth re-torquing the bottom bracket.
You could also tear down the pedals and grease.

I have the same problem with my Shimano PD-M520 pedals. I thought it was the bottom bracket or other crank related item at first but know it is the pedals as I have had them on two different bikes. In my case it is the left side only. The bike did fall on that side one time in its history. I have disassembled this pedal once and did not notice anything abnormal. Upon reassembly it seemed better but now after about 1,000 miles (I have the pedals on my road bike) it has gotten significantly worse. There are approx. 1,500 miles total on these pedals. I plan to disassemble again but will not have the time for a couple of weeks. Will follow up when complete. In the mean time I have procured a set of PD-M540 units as I really like the overall design and I have a set of PD-M324 units on another bike so I can use my shoes with all the combos I have.

Does the click occur when you're on the pulling part of the pedalling cycle. If the release tension has been set way loose, as is often done for someone new to clipless, it may be your foot is lifting slightly away from the pedal on the pull up. Tightening the release tension will fix it. Remember to tighten both sides of a double sided pedal equally.

Here is a little bit of an interesting find. I took my bike over to my apts pressure wasing area for cars (to get some mudd and grease off of the back from riding through some wet dirty areas in streets) and after spraying it down, the clicking was lessoned by about 85 percent. I dont know if the water acted as a lub and or what. Could this water have gotten in the BB and lubed it up enough to even do anything?

As a side note, I do not have the proper tools to get the pedals off my bike to put the origional ones on, but the click does happen when using normal shoes with the M520's.

ALSO, when ever I stand in the seat with both pedals horizontal (like when going over bumps and such) the click almost always happens.

I'm confused bikerboy.... if you have 520's.. they have allen bolt on the pedal on the inside of the crank arms... don't need a pedal wrench... just an allen.

My bet's on the shoe/cleat/clip/foot angle combination, and that the BB, crank, and pedal bearings are fine.
