ARAYA rims
Hello,
On a set of aluminum ARAYA wheel rims; it’s stamped with 27 x 1-1/4 w/o HP. What does HP stands for? I thought; it is for a clincher and not for a tubular tire. Now, I worry, that the ‘w/o’ means ‘with-out’ clinchers. The rims came with a set of tubes and clincher tire. Is this the proper combination? I certainly don’t need another crash, mind you the last one was caused by a chain reaction in a group and not of a tire coming off.
Thanks Roland

The HP probably refers to a "hooked bead" which is a ridge of metal left at the inside edge of the rim to catch and hold the tire bead. Hooked beads hold the tire much more securly tha non-hooked rims and allow higher tire pressures with out the tire coming off. I expect your rims don't have the hooked bead so the tire pressure you can safely use is probably limited to about 90 psi.
And yes, your rims are certainly intended for clincher tires.

My bikes became Vintage
I'm thinking HP means High Pressure. Back in the "old days", "racing bikes" came with 27 x 1-1/4 High Pressure tires and comuter bikes had 26 x 1-3/8 tires inflated to lower pressure.
