I'm swapping carbon forks.

How do you get that plug out and how do you install it?

carefully. If it isn't obvious then take it to an LBS.

There are two designs of compression plugs I'm familiar with:

1. The first has as a hex bolt in the center of the top cap. Loosen the bolt several turns and push down on it to loosen the expander plug. Then pull the entire assembly out the top.

2. This type has a hex hole (usually 6mm) in the top cap and a hex bolt (5 mm) down inside. Loosen the top cap a couple of turns with a 6 mm hex key then stick a 5 mm hex key all the way down and loosen the inner bolt several turns. Pull the entire assembly up to remove it.

Another type has a kind of alum. ring around the base which is tapered. When you tighten the top hex it pulls up and seats the unit in the steerer tube. If you have this type you just remove the bolt and tap the middle down until it is dislodged. Turn the fork upside down and the parts fall out. Hope your orig. fork does not have one that is epoxied into the fork. In that case you will have to buy a new one. Usually less than 15 bucks. Good luck.
