Crank bolt problem

The second time something happens you know you have a problem. Ritchey WCS crankset with about maybe 500 miles and the non drive side crank bolt has loosened for the second time. Originally installed to proper torque. Should I use threadlock when retightning? Any ideas. Thanks.

I don't hear of crank bolts self loosening when properly torqued during installation (typically around 30+ ft-lb). Are they square or splined crank arm to spindle interface?

If you do plan to use a threadlocking compound, I'd start with a "light weight" version, often referred to as "serviceable". For example, Loctite 242 (blue coloured) might be a good choice. Make sure you clean the threads or oil/grease before installing the compound.

But I'm still wondering why it would come loose in the first place? Do your cranks require a washer under the bolt head? Perhaps the softer aluminum crank arm is deforming under the bolt head, allowing the joint to relax? (I'm just thinking out loud).

thanks. thought I might get some more input on this problem. No washer was supplied with the cranks, purchased new. Will check with Ritchey to see if they are required and were omitted from package. Thanks.
