Best bike pump?
 

I'm on my third unsatisfactory floor pump in the last little while. I'm a road biker and though I don't jack the PSI up to obscene levels, I do try to pump up before most rides. So, the pump gets used a lot.

So, I thought I'd ask the mechanics which pump they'd recommend. At this point, I'm willing to drop some serious coin, if necessary, to get a good pump. For me a good pump would be one that lasted more than a few months, had an accurate guage, and pushed a lot of air with each stroke.

What do people recommend?

well, I have one that is full carbon fiber with ti trim. its super aerodynamic for taking it in and out of the closet at maximal efficiency. :rolleyes:

What I'm saying is that I've tried a series of cheap pumps and they didn't last and/or the gauge was inaccurate. I'm not trying to spend just to spend, just saying I'm will to spend if there's a pump that will last longer and be easier to use.

I like my silca pista a lot.

I got a wrench force on sale for $25 (was $50) to replace my cheapy Blackburn. Very nice! Replaceable brass chuck, wood handle, good and solid. Recommend highly.

It always helps when making suggestions to know the names/models of the three unsatisfactory floor pumps so as to not waste your time suggesting one you may have already discounted as "unsatisfactory".

Features:
Brass chuck with replaceable pieces (a BIG deal)
Chuck has very solid bite on valve ( a big deal)
Aluminum body (not such a big deal)
PSI as high as you could possibly want; high enough for track bikes (150+)
Wood handle (comfy: again, not a huge deal).

Drawback:
Because the chuck has such a firm bite, it takes about 14 seconds longer than most other models to disengage it. Push the chuck on to the valve to engage it. To disengage, release the hose by pushing a chuck sleave and then screw the chuck head off. Unusual, and takes a little more time.

Recommend highly.

$10 compressor ftw.

Specialized are pretty good.
Joe Blow...well, blows (I have broken the chuck on 2)

I have a Silca Pista that I bought on the "return" table at Nashbar's outlet store for $12 ten years ago and it has required only a new chuck gasket (~ $1) every couple of years and I maintain 5 bikes. I can't think of a stronger endorsement.

After much research on different boards I narrowed my search down to the most highly spoke of pumps I could find.

Silca "Super Pista" and the Joe Blow "Pro".

I found a good deal on a Joe Blow "Pro" so I went that way.
I was told by someone that the gauge is off on those pumps.

I bought a Zafel gauge and it reads the same pressure.Either they are both off by the same amount or my stuff is on target.

I have the same Wrench Force pump as feetifofum. It's great. The chuck solved the problem I've sometimes had releasing other pumps' clamp-on heads (and much of the air I just pumped into the tire): you slide down the sleeve to release the hose and the pressure pops it off.

I have a Blackburn TP-4 with a Topeak chuck. After 5 years, it still looks like a good investment. I originally tried to get a Silca Pista but couldn't find one in Canada (back in 2000 I hadn't used the internet to buy stuff yet, and I think ebay was just starting up).

I like my new Planet Bike ST. Today I pulled both wheels on my Specialized Crossroads Elite to replace the s--t rubber rim liners with Velox tapes. A buddy gave me a new set of Avocet Cross 700x28c which we mounted only to have the rear flat, NEVER ridden. When I pulled tire/tube/liner ... the fault was the liner where the spoke hole cut both liner and tube. The Planet Bike pump was a piece of cake to gauge up to 105 psi. I used the two tire change opportunity to try my new Crank Bros. alloy pump ... that sucker was DOA. Thank goodness I wasn't on the road and needed that bad boy. It's going back to LL Bean where I bought it and I'm now looking at a Topeak Turbo Morph w/ guage. (the new Nashbar catalog has it listed for $29.95 vs $39.95

I'd like to hear other folks' recommendation on Topeak frame pumps ....

my wife bought the last floor pump (cringe) and she came home with an ascent pump for performance.

oh no, i thought....what has she done?

i was sure i would hate the house brand pump but frankly it puts the silca to shame. pushes more air, levered chuck release so the a chuck doesn't shoot off the valve like a bullet, dinging my hub.

i'm not sure of the model but i really like this pump in the last year i have been using it!

I did a lot of research before I found a good bike pump. In the end I got the Serfas Bike Floor Pump. It's a great pump for the money and has more than 140 five star reviews on Amazon.

I work/go on cross country bike tours. 40 to 50 people pumping their road bikes daily for 20 to 34 days. We have used all kinds of pumps and have now settled on Parks floor pump. They can still be broken but are lifetime warrantied and we have used that feature from time to time but not real often. The latest version they have finally changed the head so you tighten it on the valve by pushing towards the rim instead of pulling it away from the rim and the valve. Much better design. Roger

After my Blackburn and Lezyne pumps both failed, I got a Specialized pump for $30-$40. It's been very reliable. I do still carry a Lezyne road drive pump on the bike though.

Some others agreed with my preference for the Lezyne line, others did not.

Now that this thread has been resurected, my current floor pump is a Park PFP-4 refitted with the ridiculously expensive Hirame HP-20 pump head. The Park's OEM head works OK but this combination works better and more reliably than anything else I've ever used.

To the OP: I have a 16.00 Zefal floor pump from ***gasp*** Walmart. It has a gauge and 200psi limit. I dont know if that will fit your desires but it sure has done a great job for me. The handle is egonomically designed, good length on the hose, easy to adjust valve options, good clamping pressure on valve. Oh, and the guage is easy to read if that applies.

What more anyone could want is totally beyond my limited understanding. :D

I think I have the same Zefal pump as you. I was wanting a "good" pump but decided to try the walmart Zefal just because I saw it there for <$20. (I kept the reciept!) I have no complaints with it. I expected the plastic head to break at some point, but 4 months later it's still working fine. My road tires get topped to 120 daily with it.

I like my Blackburn a whole lot. I like my Joe Blow even more.

I see the chuck (head) as something that wears out from time to time. I have replaced the heads on both pumps. I'm fine with that. These pumps will last for decades.

Just go to your bike shop and see what they have for around $40.
