Front Mech and Crank Question

The XT front mech I just installed doesn't travel far enough over the big chain ring. I have taken the L screw out and still it doesn't. I have pulled the wire tight by hand to check this.

I have also just installed a 2006 Xt hollowtech II crank set - I have a 63mm BB shell and I I have put one spacer on the right (chain ring) side of the BB - this is the only thing that I think must be the problem with the front mech not able to move far enough out over the large ring.

So my questions - 1) any idea's on the front mech problem ? 2) cud it be the spacer on the BB that is the problem ? 3) How do I know if I need that spacer there or not ?

Thanks !!

When attaching the shift cable to the front derailleur the shifter must be in the smallest chainring position with all of the cable released from the shifter.

Pretty sure it was - I normally make sure I do that... I do not the think the cable is too tight - but I will release it and check.

Anyone know if I definitely need the spacer on the BB ?
