Broken SPD pedal? Unusable shoe?

I ride clipless with the VP spd pedals that come on many entry-level Bianchis, and I recently had a situation where I had to completely unscrew the tensioner to get my shoe out. The cleat on my shoe was too loose to clip out of the pedal, which is why I resorted to de-tensioning the pedal. Now, I'm trying to get the screw back in, but it's so tough, I can't get it through the little hole in the washer-type thing between the center part of the pedal that's connected to the spindle and the edge part of the pedal that moves (sorry I don't know the technical names, couldn't find a diagram of this particular pedal). It seems like there's some spring action preventing me from adjusting the washer so that it is aligned with the screw.

Furthermore, I tried removing the cleat from the offending shoe, and one of the screws is stripped, but in a strange way. Rather than being stripped in the normal sense, where you can get the allen wrench in but it doesn't "bite", I can't even get the allen wrench in. I know I'm using the right sized wrench, but it seems like the outer part of the screw got damaged and "caved in"? Bizarre. What weird pedal/cleat problems! Really makes riding a pain and worries me that I'll have to get new pedals and new shoes.

The latter bit sucks the most because I just bought these pedals! Do any of you have these pedals and know what I'm talking about? Anyone have an idea of how I could repair this pedal? The bike shop is closed today, so I thought I would look online. I searched using google, sheldon brown, and this site, too. But I found nothing relating to this, so that's why I started this thread. Help me!

Cleats wear out and need to be replaced.

You may have to use some small pointed tool (like an awl) to move the tension adjuster closer to the back of the pedal so that the threads of the screw can grab it. JMHO, but those pedals are crap. I would get a pair of Shimano SPDs sooner rather than later. As for your shoe, take out the good screw and try to use a pair of needlenose pliers to grab the edges of the bad one and twist it out, or use a cutoff wheel on a Dremel to file a slot into the head of the screw and use a screwdriver to remove it. When you reattach your cleats to the shoe, use some blue Loctite, and make sure your tighten them down securely so that you won't have this problem again.

The dremel idea sounds like it might work since the screw might be in too tight to use needlenose pliers. As for the pedal, maybe I can fix this, using a vice or an awl, but like you said, i should get some better ones. Thanks for the help.

As long as you haven't gouged the shoe sole really badly with the moving cleat, your shoes should be fine. I'm not familiar with these cleats, but you might look into getting some very slightly longer screws. My LBS has a box of screws, and I needed some that were just 2 threads longer, and they gave them to me for free.

The marred bolt head can probably be dealt with by slightly easing the ends of the allen key. Get one that's disposable (like one that came with a bike part or one from Harbor Freight). Drag it along some sand paper on the end so that each of the six edges get a little taper to them. Then tap it into the bolt with a hammer. This will bend the marred material out of the way and still give a good contact surface to loosen the bolt. Taper the wrench as little as possible.

You might also use a smaller wrench to try to bend the bolt hole back into shape. Don't try to unscrew with it. Maybe an SAE wrench is just slightly smaller than the metric you're using?

When you reinstall, grease the hell out of the bolt threads and head-bottom face, and really crank them down tight. Don't use a braker bar or anything, but make sure the cleats will never move around.
