Shimano 600 pedal woes..

As a follow up to this post, I've bought myself a set of decent used road pedals with clips and straps. I'm keeping them as a backup, for when my SPD bearings finally decide to crap out on me.

One of the pedals is a bit tighter than the other, making it harder to flip over to get my foot in. I want to repack them, and loosen the bearing compression a little.

The problem is, I CANNOT GET THIS FREAKIN DUST CAP OFF!!!!

I searched around on the bikeforums archives, and the only mention of them says that the cap is 'friction' fit, and some people have lost theirs.

If this cap is held in place by friction, the Shimano factory must have used a whole tube of it!

Theres a little notch for a flat blade screwdriver to fit in, and I tried that.
Turning or levering the screwdriver only results in the plastic cap deforming.

I've also tried two butter knives, on each side, prying at the same time.

Has anyone here serviced these pedals?
If so, how the hell did you get the cap off?

You need acetone.

try a utility knife blade, carefully, of course.
