(hand) grip stuck halfway
To All:
The hand grip is stuck on the handlebar halfway - not all the way in. I can't move it inward or outward. Unfortunately, I added this grip before I knew about the "soap" trick. I tried pouring dishsoap on it in hope some of the soapy water will creep in, but no success. I also tried using a 2x4 (block of wood) and bang the grip out or in. The !@#$%^ grip is still dead stuck halfway on the handlebar. Any other idea(s) to try? Thanks in advance for any suggestion(s)! Sheng-Chieh |
Pry up the edge of the grip and try some isopropyl alcohol between the grip and the bar. Pry up the edge in several places around the circuference and pour some in. The standard recommendation is your SO's hair spray, used prior to install sprayed on the bar and inside the grip allows the grip to be rapidly slid into place. Don't dally. Isopropyl on the bar and inside the grip also works nicely, grips just slid right on.

dumb question: what does SO means? Sheng-Chieh |
SO = "significant other" -- your boyfriend or girlfriend.
As to your grips, try finding a wrench that is just a bit larger than the circumference of the handlebar. Fit it around the handlebar, push it up against the grip's side, hold the wrench securely, and tap the exposed part of the wrench's handle with a hammer *towards the grip* until the grip slides off. Good luck! |
Get a thin blade screwdriver under the grip (be careful not to scratch the bar), and using the thin tube that comes with WD-40, squirt some in there and work it around. Just be sure to clean it off after you do this. I've even used WD to slide grips on, and have never had them slip after letting them "dry" overnight.
Of course, it doesn't take much-use sparingly. I'm sure I'll hear rebuttals to this, but it has worked for me, with no problems. |
if you've got access to an air compressor, use the airgun attachment to "inflate" the grip and slide it on/off of the bars. the alcohol/screwdriver trick works well also.

Another dumb question: What is WD? Pardon me, but I'm not familiar with bike (and other mechanics) stuffs. (used wheelchair for the past 5+ years and don't drive.) WD-40 is what? Car's oil??? Sheng-Chieh |

Sheng-Chieh Odds are you got a can sitting around in your garage. People use as a lubricant, among other stuff, although it's not reccomended that you hose your bike's drivetrain down with it :) |
I second using an air compressor. What I did to remove mine was to use one of those ball inflator needles, stuck between the edge of the grip and the bar. Slid off nice and easy. Grips had been on for one season (removed to replace brake levers).
