New pedals on old bike
I have a 78 Free Spirit and the old pedals are beat. It seems the thread size is roughly 7/16"...Is that right?

My guess is 1/2" threaded pedals. This was common on bikes with one-piece cranks, and you can still get such pedals, often designed for cheap kid's bmx bikes with one-piece cranks.

The "root diameter" of the threads is 1/2". What you are measuring is the distance between the peaks of the threads and that will be less than 1/2". The folks telling you you have 1/2" threaded pedals are right and any bike shop will know what you want if you ask for this size.
For comparison, better quality cranks have 9/16" threads. I just measured the ID of a good crank that I'm absolutely sure takes 9/16" pedal threads and the measurement was 0.505" or right around 1/2".
