stuck shimano nexus 4 speed

I just got a killer bargain from craigslist: a shimano 4 speed nexus with roller brake (? brake actuated with a cable) in a 700c wheel, a grip shifter, and a chain tensioner.

The only problem being the hub doesn't work. I see it as a great opportunity to dig in and see how it's made. The axle does not spin, or requires lots of force to spin. If I grip the cog and try to spin it from there (also requires a bit of force), I think I can feel the freewheel ratcheting because it follows a pattern of spin half circle, click, spin, click, spin...

My more knowledgeable bike buddy made a guess that _something_ might be too tight. We'd like to loosen off and peer in from the drive side. Instead of an axle nut, there's something that resembles a mini-cassestte (slightly larger in diameter than a nut, and has splines). What kind of tool can grip this?

Are there any service manuals for the nexus hubs? Can anyone speak from personal experience? Any online links? Guesses?

I figure $30 was worth the fun in trying to figure it out.

oh and the brake squeals like a b!t$h when im going real fast, and slow down fast... downhill...

I tried pulling and pushing the brake cable, but that still didn't work. One interesting thing is the black metal piece that routes the cable will rotate. I'll try to post some pictures to clarify later.

Take a look at the link I provided, that would be the place to start.
