Are my frogs dead?

I picked up a set of frogs at a swap meet for cheap as they need rebuilt. There is a ton of play between the body and spindle. Will a rebuild kit fix that or should I not spend the money on it?

I believe the Frogs are like the Zeros and the X pedals, in that they have one or more cartridge bearings and a needle bearing in the spindle. The cartridge bearing is replaceable, but the needle bearing is not, so if that one is gone, the pedal is toast. It should be easy enough to take them apart and see.

www.speedplay.com should have some pdf downloads of maintenance methods. Yup, they do. Just click on Floyd's image to clear it from the screen.

I've rebuilt a couple pairs of frogs. Even though I replaced the bearings and pedal body, it was still not as tight as a new pedal.

Thus, i think the spindle itself must wear some. However, this was not an issue for me since i like things to spin freely.

Speedplay sells two rebuild kits for the Frogs. One replaces all the bearings and the second replaces the outer shells. After you fit both all you have left of the originals are the spindles.

The rebuild kits total about 70% of the cost of a new pair which, btw, come with $30 worth of new cleats. When my last pair of Frogs failed after 36,000 miles, I gave them a decent funeral and bought new ones.
