Shimano Barcon Shifter Retrofit
I have an 8 speed indexed Shimano barcon that can be run in friction mode. Can I use this for a 7 speed and get it to work in the friction mode?
So, based on the following responses, I can use the 8 speed indexing to shift on a 7 speed freewheel. I guess the if the stop is set correctly on the derailleur then the extra "click" that is available on the derailleur is never reached. This shifter has 7 clicks which to me means 1 gear + 7 gears = 8 speeds. Is this correct? |
In friction mode there will be no problem.

I'm pretty sure that the cog spacing is the same with Shimano 7 and 8 speed clusters. If so, it should index as well.

No need to use friction mode. The cog spacing between 7 and 8-speed is so close that 8-speed shifters will index perfectly over a 7-speed cassette or freewheel. This is the set-up I'd been running since April on my nice bike, and up until it was KO'd in an argument with an automobile bumper last week, it worked perfectly :).
