Adjusting the index marker on shifters
I have a mountain bike from about 1997 with deore LX index shifters. At some point during the life of the bike the index mark that shows you what gear you are in was moved. Instead of showing that I am on the 4th cog, it shows I am either on the 3rd or 4th. I know its not a big deal, but, being a bit anal, I would like to adjust it. Is this done at the shifter or the deraileur?

You can take apart the shifter and see if it's an adjustable part. However, if you're not familiar with shifters or mechanically inclined, it is easy to lose small parts or have a hard time getting it back together the right way.
