Rear Derailleur Trouble

I'm having trouble with my chain and rear:

the chain will not stay on the one of the gears in the rear derailleur (the one circled in red) and this is not letting me change gears.

Hears a pic of where the trouble is.

could be.........

Bent derailleur plates, the 2 pulleys should be in line with each other.....you should see if it was bent enough to make a difference.

or maybe...

Stiff link in chain that skips over pulley when it goes by....look at the chain as it goes through to see if it skips.

theres no crud build up is there?

Thanks for the help it turns out it was the derailleur plates the pully wern't alined so i bent it back into shape and it works just fine now. Good thing it was just my old bike at my campground. Again Thanks for the help.

Thanks,

Could be bent plates.

Could also be a loose jockey wheel back there, or simply a maladjusted RD.

I noticed that you've depicted an Ultegra shifter. Was this a recent upgrade? If so, and you are running an older drivetrain (6 sp, 7 sp...maybe with 8 speed) it could be that the chain is too wide for the chain jockey.

Also check it for "gunk".

The Picture was just a picture of any derailleur not the one on my bike.
