Front hub has side to side movement?

Front hub has side to side movement?
I just bought a 2005 Devinci Destination Touring bike and it is great with the exception of the front hub. I can slide the wheel about 4mm side to side when it is on the bike. The quick release is tight and the wheel is not wobbling at all. It is 100% horizontal movement. I am relatively new to biking and I don't have the slightest clue what could be causing this. The cones seem to be nice and tight and the wheel is not binding up. I don't want to find out that I am destroying the hub by riding it this way.
Any ideas on what could be causing this, and how can I fix it?

You say the movement is the hub sliding back and forth along the axle, if that's so have someone experienced adjust the cones. As you describe it it seems the only place where there may be some allowance of movement.

pull it apart and overhaul the whole thing, as stated, the cones probably need to be adjusted, I just did this to my ATB about 30mins ago. easy job.

If the hub has cartridge bearings, the "cones" may have a cylindrical section that goes inside the inner race between it and the axle. If these cones aren't adjusted properly the wheel could move side-to-side without rocking.
