You want to be selective so you don't carry too much in the way of tools. But a good comprehensive multi tool like the Park MTB3 is a good start (there are other multi tools that are good too). Also get a pair of mini folding pliers like a Leatherman; I got a set of cheap ones from Target made by Eddie Baur(sp?). You'll also need a set of tire irons, if your riding on 700x32's or smaller because the mini tools tire irons are more for mtb tires. That's about it for tools unless your worried about other things that chances are nothing will happen, like pedal wrenches, headset tool, crank puller blah blah, stuff that you will more then likely never use.
You probably know about the rest of this stuff, but you should consider taking at least one spare tube in it's box to protect it, a folding tire just in case you destroy a tire, at least 12 patchs (I use the Park Glueless patchs because they work great and are faster to apply), a tire boot patch (again Park makes a good one), a fibre spoke for emergency replacement of a spoke. You need to take a pump obviously, but consider taking a back up pump; on rides of more then 50 miles one way I take a frame pump and a mini pump; CO2 pumps would be stupid on a tour to take. By the way, I always try to fix a tube or tire first before replacing it so that in case of major damage to either later I have new spares instead of used ones. Good luck and have fun on your tour. |
