Bianchi Build up
 

I'm wanting to perform a build up of my ~94 Bianchi Nuova Alloro Special and would appreciate some help in figuring out what I can and (more importantly) can't put on the bike. I have a completely mixed group now and want to go to a mostly single campy or possibly shimano group.

Here is what I have:
shimano 105 shifters on downtube (maybe go to STI or stay with DT)
Modolo America breaks and levers (I love these, but would consider replacing with sti)
shimano 105 RD (replace)
compy FD (clamp on, no idea of the model)
Bianchi cranks (2 ring) (These are nice, so I can just upgrade the rings or the whole thing)
UNK BB (has bianchi engraved bolts into it) (rebuild or replace it? Italian or English?)
6 spd cassette (should I go 8/9 or 10 ring, I know I need to open up the frame, but is 10 to big?)

Wheels/hubs will be separate.

I hope to find all of these parts on e-bay or local in new/good used condition. This will be my winter project, so I have some time. Any and all info would be fantastic.

To answer one question, 8, 9 and 10-speed hubs are the same width (130 mm OLD) and so are all of the cassettes so choose whatever you want. The amount you will have spread the frame will be identical for all of them.

I presume that by 1994 Bianchi had gone to English threaded bottom brackets but I'm not certain of this. If it's a Shimano UN (i.e. sealed cartridge type) you can't rebuild it. If the bearings are bad or it's the wrong width for what ever crank you choose, you have to replace it.

ack! why would you want to put shimano back on such a nice italian bike?! ;) I'd go all campy..

Why do you want to replace the rings on the crank? do they have a lot of miles, if not just keep the rings (unless you want to change gear ratios) and rebuild the BB (you can tell if it is sealed or not, by the presence of a lockring (bottom left in this pic)

also are you sure that you have a 6 speed cassette and not a freewheel? (check for a lockring also)

IMO I'd keep this bike vintage looking, I think it will probably look better with downtube shifters than sti/ergo

Yea I know... I'm seeing how I can afford the flippen $1000 campy crap :p I'm looking all over and it isn’t easy to come by on the cheap. Ultegra is reasonable.

cause I want a compact... i have a 52-42 now... I want a 52-36 or something. I like the lower gear for the crazy hills here. I guess the extended cassette will help too.

It doesn’t matter.. its getting replaced with a 8-9-10

I don’t care about that so much, I just want a nice well performing bike. STI is cool, but I'd also like to find some DT shifters that would work with the other campy 8-9-10 stuff. All I have seen is bar end.. not DT

yeah, good luck with the dt. Campy 9 speed mirage or veloce stuff is dirt cheap.

actually it does, if you have a 6 speed FW then your hub/wheel needs to be replaced to go to a cassette... or you are limited to a 8 or 9 FW which might be harder to find...

Go for a Veloce group. $500 buys the whole thing including cabling, cranks, BB - the works. You can have compact crank if you like and any gearing on the cassette that appeals to you. Nicer to use than Ultegra. You will need to do something with that rear wheel or hub, however.

My Ciocc is newer than your Bianchi and was actually designed to have ergo or sti equipment. I have it equipped with a 10 speed Veloce group with a 50/36 compact crank. It weighs less than 20 lbs. and runs like a top.

Please show me where and I'm in... I found some various campy junk on e-bay for 400... I'd take the whole group for 500. I kind of like the stream line cabling if sti, but I like the campy components better for sure. I think I have a campy BB, cranks and FD. Just the RD and FW is shimano.

Naa it doesn't matter cause I plan to put new wheels on it with the appropriate cassette. :D
