i have a bike with shimano 105 sti shifting and two chainrings.

shifting up from the small chainring, the shifter can 'click' twice. the first 'click' doesnt catch the big ring and so i have to shift again. but, shifting down from the highest cable tension setting it jumps immediately to the lowest setting (skipping the middle 'click' setting). why arent there just two settings? is it made to be compatible with three chainrings? but then why wouldnt it stop on the middle setting when i downshift?

so i tried to adjust derailleur to move to the large chainring without having to up shift twice. but that didnt work.

ok i figured out you can just push the shifter through both 'clicks'...

Sounds like you have shifters that can be used with 3 rings and someone set them up using the first setting for your small ring and your third setting for your big ring, skipping the second. What you can do is adjust the derailer so you are using the third and second clicks, third/big ring, second/small ring. Then screw the low gear limiting screw in until it prevents the derailer from moving the chain off the small ring.

I have found this to be a better way to set it up and you will get quicker shifting up front.

I used the 105's and Ultegras and have read that you use those "small clicks between gears" up front to trim. For example, when you are on the small chainring and start getting into a smaller cog on the rear, you might hear some chain contact with the front derailleur...you can then push the front shifter in one small click to trim it up and get rid of that noise without having to shift to the large chainring. Vice versa for the large chainring and larger cogs (you would bump it down one small click to trim it up).

one more question: if i were to ever add a chainring would i have to replace these shifters too?

does shimano make two versions of the 105 shifter (one for double and one for triple)?

Nope. 105 and Ultegra will shift both double and triple chainrings.
