Brifter Question
 

I've read someplace that the subtle pre-loaded "play" I feel in the large shift lever [as opposed to the smaller "dump" lever. . .or do I have that bass-ackwards?] is to invoke some sort of small tweak on the derailleur throw.

Could some kind person 'splain this to me? How would I know when I need to toggle it? Noise in the drivetrain maybe? Is there something here I need to consider when adjusting the derailleurs? Does it apply to both fore and aft derailleurs?

Care to tell us what components you're talking about?

I think you are talking about the trim function. It is only available on the front and only on road setups as far as I know. You can get the technical info and how to use your particular shifters off the Shimano website.

It depends on whether it is Campagnolo or Shimano. They are very different animals. Set up and function isn't the same. That's why the OP asked what model. He wants to help, not screw things up. This isn't a generic shifting question. Good luck
