Shimano Rapid Fire Shifter
I just bid on a Deore Rapid Fire front derailleur shifter for my Schwinn High Plains mtb, and now I am having bidder’s remorse because I did not confirm that it’d work with my Shimano 200GS derailleur. I assumed that the front is not as critical as the rear. Have I made a mistake?
It is a newer shifter, made for 27 speed. My old one which blew up is for 21 speed. But am I right in thinking that since both have triple chainrings that the front shifter should be compatible?
here it is

I think you need to take a trip to www.sheldonbrown.com
Um I think that the spacing on 7 speed front chain rings is different than that of 8/9 speed.
If your rear derailer is sis you are supposedly good to go. sheldon brown again.

My rear derailleur is SIS indeed, I have a Shimano Bio-Pace crank and chainrings in front. (Is that safe to admit here?)

Indexing is controlled by the shifter. There is a big difference in the spacing of 7 and 9 speed cassettes. In essence the detent spacing in a rapidfire shifter will not move to the corresponding cogs on a 7 speed cassette. So yes you bid on a incompatible shifter.

You should be fine, the amount of throw required to move the derailleur is similar, the difference being the width of the derailleur and the corresponding chain. You should be fine!

I was sniped by another ebayer and lost anyway. Thanks to all of your input.
I purchased a NOS 7 speed shifter set from my LBS, both front and back, came with new cables and housings too.
