Nexus Hub Maintenance:

I have a Trek Clyde 2002 model, and I've been told that it's about time I had the internals of the Nexus 4sp. hub lubricated. It is the non-brake type. I know this requires a proprietary Nexus hub grease, but when I asked all the local Trek shops about doing the job, they seemed to have some trepidation about it. The common story seems to be, ' if it ain't broke, don't fix it...' But Shimano recommends doing the hub lubrication yearly. So now I'm in a quandry. Is this something I might do myself? Special tools? I saw a mechanical cross-section drawing of the hub, and it looks like something out of NASA Space Center. Any help would be appreciated. (m.)

See the man.

Learn all about the Nexus.
This is Africa, 1943. War spits out its violence overhead and the sandy graveyard swallows it up. Her name is King Nine, B-25, medium bomber, Twelfth Air Force. On a hot, still morning she took off from Tunisia to bomb the southern tip of Italy. An errant piece of flak tore a hole in a wing tank and, like a wounded bird, this is where she landed, not to return on this day, or any other day.

i got the same hub, but with the brake. My LBS said he can take it apart and re lube it. And i think he said he can even change some parts, but it costs.
